Issues with hearing aid tubing and domes can significantly impact the overall performance and comfort of hearing aids. These components play a crucial role in sound transmission and proper fit within the ear. Addressing common problems associated with tubing and domes is essential for ensuring optimal hearing aid functionality and user satisfaction.

Replacing the tubing

If your hearing aid tubes or domes need replacing, then this is not necessarily something that you need to see a professional for. Generally, if there is no other issue with the device, then you should be able to do this yourself, once you understand how to.

  • The first thing that you are going to do for behind the ear hearing aids is take it apart. This might be a little bit tricky but the tubing should come away from the ear mold quite easily. Just keep this tubing to one side for now.
  • It’s important that you wash the earmold and dry it thoroughly to ensure that it is clean, but that it’s definitely not wet.
  • Once you’re sure that it’s completely dry, you can get your new piece of tubing and push the tapered end into the ear mold. The tapered part should be at the bottom, and should be pushed through.
  • Pull the tube until it creates a 90-degree angle, or as close as you can get.
  • You’re going to need to carefully cut the tapered end of the hearing aid off next, so make sure that you have some scissors handy. In order to avoid irritating your ear, you need to ensure that you have a clean, neat cut.
  • Grab your older piece of tubing to measure the length that the new tube needs to be. Cut this with scissors now that you have the right length, and you can get rid of the old tubing.
  • Finally, push the tube back into the hearing aid. To do this, pinch the end of the tube, and wiggle it into the hook

You’re all set to change the tubing of a behind the ear hearing aid now!

Replacing a dome

It is recommended that you replace the dome of your hearing aid every month or so, unless you have been advised differently by your audiologist. Speak to them just to ensure that you are doing the right thing.

  • The first thing that you need to do to replace a dome is to hold onto the speaker or the thin tube, and pull off the earpiece.
  • Next, you need to place the speaker or thin tube exactly in the middle of the earpiece to ensure that it is in the right place.
  • The last step is to push firmly to ensure that it is fastened securely, and you’re all done!
  • Changing a dome is super simple, and can be done by pretty much anyone. Ensure you’re keeping up with your replacements to keep your hearing aid in working order.

When to Visit an Audiologist

If you have tried to make these replacements and it has not been as easy as you thought or something has gone wrong that you can’t seem to fix, book an appointment with your audiologist. They should be able to take a look at what has happened and fix any issues that you were having.
